running pint!

We are the Mighty Micros!

We are a loose-knit organization of masters track and field athletes (age 30 - 100). We have two passions: running and beer. On the track, we are serious. Off the track, we are thirsty.

In competition, we run, jump and throw. In the pub, we slurp, slosh and guzzle. We set world records. We prefer world class micro-brews.

We participate in masters track and field meets during the summer and challenge all-comers to join us in intense competition followed by rigorous fluid replacement (i.e., beer consumption).

We are unencumbered by bureaucracy and geographical boundaries. Anyone from anywhere can be a Mighty Micro.

Relay World Records Set in Eugene

The Mighty Micros made history once again at the Hayward Masters Classic last weekend (June 26-27) at the University of Oregon in Eugene.

On Saturday, four masters runners shaved nearly 50 seconds off the previous M40-49 4xMile Relay world best time by clocking 17:14.31. The splits were Pete Magill, CA (4:21.1), Brian Pope, MS (4:18.7), John Hinton, NC (4:20.6) and Tony Young, WA (4:14.0).

Mighty Micros 2003 National Championships Report ------------------------

Mighty Micros on the track....

The Mighty Micros fielded three relay teams at the National Masters Championships in Eugene on August 10, 2003 and scored three medals. Our women's 30-39 4x400m relay consisting of Sarah Leonard, Kathleen Shook,Carolyn Smith-Hanna, and Kelly Wensel was red-hot, winning the gold in an impressive time of 4:21.68. Our men's 4x800m relay of Dave Clingan, Pete Magill, John Morton and Lance Podolski took silver in 8:26.48. Our men's 4x400m relay of Dave Albo, Jeff Brower, Bryan Burdo and Jim Hershberger took bronze in 3:53.34. The relays were made up of runners from nine different states, plus Australia! Aussie John "Iron Man" Morton turned in a great 800m relay leg even after already competing in the short hurdles, the 100m, the 200m, the 400m, the 800m and the 1500m! Many thanks to meet organizers who generously provided duplicate medals for relay members who competed as unofficial inter-regional pick-up teams.

Mighty Micros in the pub....
The post meet party at Track Town Pizza, after the last relay event on Sunday, was a huge success. More than 50 people showed up to hang out and sample some great local brews, including Widmer Hefeweizen, Black Butte Porter, and Mirror Pond IPA. It was a blast and we will definitely find a watering whole suitable for a similar post-meet gathering at next year's championships in Decatur. Thanks to National Masters News for co-hosting this event with the Mighty Micros!

Micros Break M40 4X1500 WORLD RECORD!

On Sunday, June 22, 2003 the Mighty Micros team of Pete Magill (42), Angel Roman (41), Kevin Paulk (42) and Young clocked 16:24.12 to crush the listed WR for M40 of 16:41.1 by the British National Veterans (Peter Molloy, 48, 4:11.0; Glen Grant, 43, 4:06.6; Dave Bedwell, 43, 4:12.6; Dave Wilcock, 43, 4:10.9) in 1996.

They all ran well, but the most stunning performance was by Angel Roman, who severely pulled a hamstring muscle with about 150m to go in the second leg of the relay. Somehow, after hobbling several strides, and despite obvious pain, he still managed to get the baton to Kevin Paulk and keep the relay alive (with a split time of 4:11!).

Other Micros who performed well at the meet included Becky Sisley (W60- 1st 80mH, 1st 300 H, 3rd HJ, 2nd LJ, 2nd JT), Jerry Wojcik (M70- 2nd WT, 3rd SP, 4th DT, 4th HT, 5th JT), Dave Clingan (1st, M45 800m), Lance Podolski (2nd M45 800m).

Several rounds of Oregon micro-brews at the 19th Street Brew Pub were consumed immediately following the meet.
